A Jewel of Guidebook

Review Date: February 19, 2008
Reviewer: Eleanor D. Payson, MI
Authors, Julie Molner and Lynn Hull have joined talents from both sides of the Atlantic and written a wonderfully inspiring guidebook that takes us gently but firmly by the hand helping us to face our challenges and push through our stagnation points to claim a better life. As wise women and experienced coaches they seem to instinctively know the thoughts and feelings we have, and in a warm and inviting writing style they guide us through the quagmire of our objections and fears.

The format of the book is clear and well organized allowing the reader to zero in on the topic uniquely important to her whether it is choosing the topic of discussion (i.e., empty nester, midlife crisis, divorce, fitness or illness, etc.) to reading a personal story, or taking time out to journal thoughts in reponse to questions. The vignettes of women's lives are authentic and illuminating, and the questions for self-exploration are thought provoking. Last, but not least, they include one of my favorite ingredients - powerful quotes from noteworthy women who have gone before us.

In short, the clarity and power of their combined voices offers us a true set of companions and guides as we seek to create a richer and fuller life. Your Life Your Way deserves to be a vital addition to every woman's library.
"If we women take a stand and model acceptance, tolerance, and peace, imagine what a snowball effect we could start."

Lynn Hull and Julie Molner have produced a book which is truly to be savoured by any woman approaching fifty, who may be wondering what's next for them in their lives.

Indeed, it is written with such wisdom and warmth that it would serve any woman, no matter what her age, to deepen the personal process of finding her unique and most fulfilling path in life.

These ladies waste no time in getting down to brass tacks. There is no philosophising here - just roll up your sleeves and get stuck into taking a good hard look at where you are right now, the phase of your life, the attendant perspectives that go with it, and what you want to make of it.

This book talks of choices, of consequences, courage, commitment and self-care, dreams and possibilities. It focuses on energy, inner wisdom, and how we need to trust our intuition and inner instinct. Yet it never loses its firm footing in real life and true experience. There is a gentle "stop kidding yourself" tone throughout, exemplified by the challenge in chapter nine, "Do you spend time convincing yourself this `unknown experience' might not be what you want?"

The exercises and opportunities for personal reflection contained in this book encourage us to banish the broken records of negative thinking, and let go of any old stories that might be running the show and holding us back. They also invite us on a delicious journey to get really comfortable with who we truly are, and take a stand for ourselves and our values.

But this is no Pollyanna-ish book. Yes, this book is for you and about you, and how to approach your life in your own unique and fulfilling way. However, it also has an intriguing and quietly revolutionary sub-text. This is that the more women of mature years continue to be true to themselves, the more they continue to bring their wisdom and instinct to the world, the better place the world will be for everyone.

This is a book to dedicate time to, and to keep returning to as you continue on your journey, for in doing so you will be dedicating time to your own life, and the lives of those around you, your way.

Life 101 Basic

A great basic - "Life 101" motivational book for women --with step by step instructions for first knowing then creating what you want in your life. Much life experience and wisdom is packed into this easy to follow format. The authors put a positive spin on middle age. Instead of being "over the hill", you are at the top of the hill; knowing where you have been with an even better view of what lies ahead. I personally (at age 60) feel a renewed enthusiasm for life and sense of purpose as well as a sense of knowing I have all the energy I need to accomplish my goals and fulfill my desires. This book is a start to getting our lives back on the right track which helps get the world on track.

Best Encouragement!

You Life, Your Way delivers just what it promises, a helpful guide to re-imagining life after 50. Hull and Molner have walked their talk and their own stories of moving towards their next adventures in life are helpful and heartfelt, it's like advice from a best friend - they have your best interests at heart.
The authors advocate begnning now, not putting off growth and change even if growth and change is a bit scary - they walk you through that. And the list on page 170 is worth the book - it will help you evaluate your direction and move you forward to a more fullfilled life!
For all of us working to move past the "mothering" phase of our lives, this is a gift.
Use it, and take advantage of what could be the best years of your life.

Reviewer: Carolyn Harris,
If you're ready for a change in your life, Your Life Your Way can help you find the path. I particularly liked the exercises and questions that encouraged you to reflect on where you are now and where you want to go.
I had a young widow visiting and she was interested in the chapter on Divorce or Death of a Spouse. There's something in Your Life Your Way for every woman.
